TRIP TO HUATULCO, MEXICO - MARCH 2024
By Connie | Trip to Huatulco International Airport, Mexico
You were patient, friendly, fast and very accommodating. You did a ton of research and gave us many options and I never doubted that you had our best interest and experience in mind. I would trust you with any travel plans.
Air: Air North was a bliss as per usual. WestJet was new to us and as so was the concept of a flight where meals are not included. We prepared better on the way back and that was totally fine. Board entertainment being on your own device was a bit awkward with either holding a phone at eye level or getting a stiff neck over time. Crews on both flights were lovely. Some customers on the WestJet flight however were rude and demanding towards them.
Hotels Vancouver: Accent Inn Hotel was great. Friendly staff and inviting design. Reallly would have liked the chance to buy a bottle of wine somewhere but there was nothing in easy walking distance. Food options are very limited. there is a restaurant in walking distance apparently but we did not try. Shuttle was easy. There is an information screen inside the building from where the bus stop is which took us a bit to realize to find out about shuttle times. Fairmont was fantastic and is my new favorite hotel in Vancouver. Great location, pleasant staff, beautiful hotel, very easy to get to with sky line. (no change of trains needed, short walk from Vancouver City Centre stop) Thank you for arranging for the late check-in!
Shuttle and hotel at destination: Shuttle was the easiest thing. You could not miss it. Very friendly staff and well organized. WestJet rep also was easy to identify.
- Allover the hotel was fantastic and we would go back in a heartbeat. Very well organized, absolutely stunning resort, clean, beautiful beaches. Rooms are located in 4 "villages" across the hilly peninsula and it was so much fun riding on the little shuttles. If the kids had been younger this is likely what we would have done all day π There are little bus stops all over and you can hop on and off as you please. Room was pleasant. With the upgrade in our case we got a balcony which many of the rooms don't have and which we enjoyed a lot. Room fridge gets restocked daily which is fun. Again, very clean and pleasant. Food was okay but not out of the world great. Beautiful restaurants in the resort which are supposed to offer variety such as Moroccan food, seafood restaurant, Mediterranean cuisine.... All dishes sound great but then were a bit disappointing and boring over time. Seems like all the food is made in the same kitchen and with that all a bit of the same style, flavour and texture. Some folks we met opted to go into town for dinner instead and liked it.
We did! We booked one tour there with the West jet guy. There are other tour operators but we somehow stuck with the one. We went to the eco tour to see a crocodile habitat and release turtles. It was a lovely around 7 hour tour that felt genuinely thought through by the organizers and we enjoyed it a lot. The bus ride was a bit tough and now we know that it's worth it getting to the bus early and get a seat more in the front of the mini van (we were in the very back and it was very bouncy and the seats worn through π We explored Santa Maria de Huatulco on our own and there is constant taxi traffic back and forth between the hotel and the town. Going to the local market was absolutely lovely and a must for anyone spending time in that area. (Saturdays and outside, not the inside a building one with all the china made touristy things) It's a bit like Fireweed Market with local farmers selling their products from hair oil to ice cream or coconut crafts. there is usually a musician playing, some folks were dancing and locals seemed to go there too. Highly recommended! One thing to note is that the hotel does NOT provide equipment for snorkeling and while you can buy goggles, flippers are nowhere to be found. We are very glad that we brought our own. The hotel offers a bird tour 3 times a week and it is well worth going, we enjoyed it a lot. Spent 2 hours wandering on and off the hotel property with a local birding guy that seemed very knowledgeable and he shared some cultural context too which was great.
General feedback: Great trip, beautiful area, felt safe. One thing to mention to anyone that like us is not an experienced resort traveller: we travelled with two teenagers who of course were excited to meet other young folks. The first few days felt a bit like we went to a resort predominantly geared towards seniors. Seriously - I was one of the younger folks and I am 55. A whole bunch of teens arrived the night before we left which is when we realized that other provinces have their spring breaks later... Not a huge thing though I would pay attention to that in the future if travelling with teenagers to ensure they are able to meet folks their own age group.
